Is tech disrupting us? (W3,P2)

Yes, as you read another post you are confronted with the same question that I am sure many of the students in this EDC3100 course have done “Is technology disrupting our social behaviour?” Is this a simple question? I believe not, this is a question that we must think critically about it is not just black an white as we may think. Although the observer to those playing pokemon go at the moment whole certainly tell you that the “gen y” are definitely being rude and antisocial. However if we look back to the “old days” as my dad would say, but did people not stand around and read newspapers and magazines … is this not the equivilant  to using TECH in this day in age??

As I was sitting there thinking about this post this afternoon I looked outside … yes outside in the fresh air and decided to go play with playful, energetic and crazy puppy. However instead of just playing with him one of the first things I wanted too do was take a photo how cute and fluffy he was. This made me laugh as I thought of this course and how I was using my phone to capture so many moments, does this make me unsocial because I wanted to capture this moment instead of just being IN  the moment. I am not sure I believe it was a very cute photo I wanted to share with my friends and family and I use this excuse a lot, but as I was doing this I started to look at Facebook, instagram and then eventually walked away and came back inside… So really how much time did I spend with my dog compared to my dog just because I got distracted with my phone?

During the time I was one my phone I also came across the blog of Belinda Jane and her insights to this exact question which made me realise I am not the only one reassessing how much time I am spending on various ICT devices.

The following article by the Huffington Post explains how we are using our phones more than we are aware. How daily life is surrounded by the NEED to use our phones to get from work and home to communicating with friends and family and how we using it more then actually eaten, sleeping or socialising face to face.

I was not aware of facts like the ones above and how similar I am to those like Belinda who also realise how much time we spend on these devices until I started this course which is really awesome to find out and know now. 1 so I can change and adapt my life to be less on the phone but still enough to have to use it for daily life and 2 because I am more aware of how it can affect my time.

Thanks and until next time stay techno.. or not ? 🙂

Jess
